Manufacturing hiring terminology: what NPI, PFMEA, APQP and GD&T mean on a resume
This is a recruiter's glossary of the vocabulary manufacturing hiring managers write into job descriptions. The reason a glossary belongs on a hiring site rather than an engineering one is practical. In manufacturing, the term in the requisition is usually the deciding requirement, and the recruiter screening the pile is often not the person who wrote it. Each entry below gives the expansion, what the term actually means in a plant, and the resume signal that tells you a candidate has done it rather than sat near it. Where a term matters for how CandidRanker scores a candidate, that is noted too.

Product introduction and development
- NPI, new product introduction. Taking a design from validated prototype to stable volume production. The resume signal is ownership of a launch: a named product or programme, the volume it reached, and the cross-functional group the candidate ran it with. "Supported NPI" and "led NPI for three programmes" are different jobs.
- APQP, advanced product quality planning. The structured five-phase framework, automotive in origin and now general, for planning quality into a product before it is made. A candidate who has run APQP will name the phase gates and the deliverables at each; a candidate who has watched it will name the acronym only.
- PPAP, production part approval process. The evidence package a supplier submits to prove it can make the part to specification repeatably. Look for the submission level worked at, commonly Level 2 or Level 3, and whether the candidate assembled the package or only contributed to it.
- DFM and DFA, design for manufacturability and design for assembly. Reworking a design so it can be made, and assembled, economically. The signal is a specific change and its result: a part count reduced, a fixture removed, a cycle time cut.
- ECN and ECO, engineering change notice and engineering change order. The controlled process for changing a released design. A candidate who has managed change control understands why the process is slow on purpose, which is a useful thing to hear in an interview.
Quality and process control
- PFMEA and DFMEA, process and design failure mode and effects analysis. The structured hunt for what can go wrong, how bad it would be, and how likely it is to be caught. This is the single most variably named competency in manufacturing hiring: process FMEA, PFMEA, FMEA (process) and failure mode analysis all appear on resumes for the same work.
- SPC, statistical process control. Monitoring a process with control charts so drift is caught before it makes scrap. The signal is which charts, on which characteristics, and what the candidate did when a point went out of control.
- Cp and Cpk, process capability indices. Whether a process can hold a tolerance, and whether it is centred while doing so. A candidate who quotes a Cpk they improved, and by what change, has run a process rather than reported on one.
- MSA and gauge R&R, measurement system analysis and gauge repeatability and reproducibility. Proving the measurement itself is trustworthy before trusting what it says about the part.
- 8D and RCA, eight disciplines and root cause analysis. The customer-facing problem-solving format and the analysis underneath it. Ask which discipline the candidate finds hardest; the honest answer is usually D5, choosing the permanent corrective action.
- GD&T, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. The symbolic language on a drawing that says how much geometric variation a feature may have. A quality or inspection candidate who cannot read it will struggle on day one, regardless of years served.
Production, maintenance and the shop floor
- OEE, overall equipment effectiveness. Availability multiplied by performance multiplied by quality. The signal is a number the candidate moved and the specific loss they attacked to move it.
- TPM, total productive maintenance. Maintenance owned partly by the operators who run the machine, not only by the maintenance department.
- MTBF and MTTR, mean time between failures and mean time to repair. Reliability and recovery. A maintenance candidate who improved MTTR usually did it through spares, standard work or diagnostics, and can say which.
- PLC and SCADA, programmable logic controller and supervisory control and data acquisition. Machine-level control and the layer that watches it. Name the platform: Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi. Platform experience transfers, but not for free.
- Takt time, cycle time and lead time. The rate demand requires, the rate the process achieves, and the total elapsed time to the customer. Candidates who confuse the first two are describing work they have not done.
- Kaizen, 5S, poka-yoke and kanban. Continuous improvement, workplace organisation, mistake-proofing and pull-based material flow. Widely claimed, so weight the specific example over the term.
Electronics manufacturing and supply chain
- EMS and OEM, electronics manufacturing services and original equipment manufacturer. The contract manufacturer and the brand owner. Which side a candidate has worked on shapes what they optimise for: an EMS background usually means changeover and mix, an OEM background usually means specification and supplier control.
- SMT and THT, surface mount technology and through-hole technology. The two ways components meet a board. SMT line experience usually implies printer, pick and place, reflow, and AOI.
- AOI and ICT, automated optical inspection and in-circuit test. The inspection and electrical test stages that catch defects before functional test.
- IPC standards, notably IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001. The acceptability and soldering standards for electronic assemblies. Certification here is verifiable and worth confirming.
- BOM, bill of materials. The structured list of everything that goes into the product. BOM ownership, and BOM accuracy, are real and separable skills.
- MRP and ERP, material requirements planning and enterprise resource planning. The planning logic and the system it lives in. Name the system: SAP, Oracle, Dynamics, Tally. Planners are hired on judgment, but screened on the system.
- MOQ and lead time. Minimum order quantity and the wait to get it. A supply chain candidate who has negotiated one against the other has done the job.
How this vocabulary is handled in CandidRanker
None of the terms above are hard-coded into MinMaxHR, and that is deliberate. A vendor-supplied manufacturing dictionary would be wrong for someone: the same acronym carries different weight in an automotive tier-one, an electronics contract manufacturer and a pharmaceutical plant.

No candidate is ever auto-rejected: a recruiter reads the evidence and decides.

A candidate who cannot will struggle from the first week regardless of years of experience.
- How should a recruiter screen for APQP and PPAP experience?
- For APQP, ask which phase gates the candidate owned and what deliverables came out of each; someone who has run it will describe the gates, someone who has observed it will repeat the acronym. For PPAP, ask which submission level they worked at, commonly Level 2 or Level 3, and whether they assembled the evidence package or contributed a part of it.
- Why do manufacturing resumes use so many different words for the same skill?
- Manufacturing vocabulary is set locally rather than industry-wide. Each employer's documentation, training and audit history fixes a preferred term, and candidates carry that term to the next employer. The same competency therefore appears under several phrasings across companies in the same industrial cluster, which is why keyword-matching screeners miss qualified people and why MinMaxHR lets each workspace define its own equivalences instead.

Both are valuable, and the requisition usually implies which one it wants without saying so.
- Which manufacturing certifications are worth verifying?
- IPC certifications such as IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 are verifiable and directly relevant for electronics assembly roles. Six Sigma belts, ASQ credentials and internal auditor qualifications for ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 are also checkable.
